OBJECTIVES: The coexistence of HBP and cholesterol alteration are more frequent every day and promote the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In Colombia, it was the seventh cause of death (2011), with an adjusted mortality rate of 11.34 x 100.000 inhabitants. The progress in diagnosis, treatment and control of HBP in Colombia is evident, however, it is necessary to implement actions of greater awareness and knowledge regarding the importance of performing clinical tests such as cholesterol in these patients for better control and effectiveness in treatments, and that dyslipidemia is twice as frequent in hypertensive patients without treatment than in normotensive patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted to identify what proportion of the population in Colombia reported with HBP according to the CHCDF information registry and of these, how many had cholesterol analysis. The data was reviewed, and the respective proportions were determined. RESULTS: According to the CHCDF registry, in 2017, 2.507.423 people with HBP and 1.487.488 with cholesterol in Colombia were identified; HDL was reported in 1.454.392 people (58%), LDL in 1.299.991 (51.84%) and Total Cholesterol in 1.487.488 (59.32%). CONCLUSIONS: According to the CDC behavioral risk surveillance system, through Healthy People 2020 reports that in the USA 30.9% of adults are informed that they have high blood pressure and 77% were tested for cholesterol during the last 5 years. In Colombia, the population reported with HBP was 7.4%; identifying a gap in percentage points of 23.5 and 17.67 respectively between countries. This situation is a warning of the need for better diagnostic-therapeutic management of these patients and to continue promoting, from regulatory and control entities and the medical societies involved in these pathologies, information programs, health education and medical training, in actions that lead to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
