HEALTH STATES UTILITY VALUES IN OSTEOPOROSIS USING TIME TRADE-OFF

OBJECTIVES: To investigate health state utility values in osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures using time trade-off method. METHODS: We developed survey questionnaires of time trade-off method for 8 health states; osteoporosis and 7 osteoporotic fractures including hip, spine, post-hip(1 year after hip fracture), post-spine(1 year after spine fracture), upper arm, wrist, and ankle. 500 females aged 49-59 were interviewed for the survey from 15 October to 30 November, 2016. Utility values for each health state were calculated and compared to the EQ-5D scores based on Korean National Health and Nutrition & Examination Survey. RESULTS: The utility values for each health state differed. Hip fracture and vertebral fractures demonstrated the lowest scores (0.3) followed by post-hip and post-spine fractures (0.45). The highest was 0.67 for osteoporosis. Given that the utility of osteoporosis based on EQ-5D index scores from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KHNANES) was 0.84, health utility using time trade-off method showed a lower value (0.67). CONCLUSIONS: Using time trade-off scenarios for eight health states related to osteoporosis, we examined health utilities for each state. Generally, the trend of scores was proportional to the severity of health states.
