ESCHERICHIA COLI; NECESSITY TO UPDATE EMPIRICAL THERAPY IN ICMR ANTI-MICROBIAL USE GUIDELINES FOR URINARY TRACT INFECTION.

OBJECTIVES:

E.coli is responsible for 80-90 % of the urinary tract infection. The study is to observe the susceptible pattern of E.coli as an essential component to contain spread of resistance, The Aim of the study is to create awareness on increasing trend in antimicrobial resistance and to provide recent susceptible pattern, so that appropriate selection of antibiotics for the empirical treatment will be practiced by the health care professionals.

METHODS:

culture reports with anti-microbial susceptible profile was collected from 3 diagnostic laboratory centres in urban area of cuddalore district in Tamil nadu. The data was collected during the month of january 2017 August 2017, in which 110 E.coli samples were taken into study.

RESULTS:

The study shows that there is a high resistance to antibiotics like levofloxacin 75.5%(n=49), cefidinir 100%(n=60), ciprofloxacin 72.7%(n=22), ceftazidine 85.3%(n=75), cefpodixime 77.52%(n=40) and cotrimoxazole 64.1%(n=50). And sensitive towards cefixime 100%(n=73), cefotaxime 96%(n=74), cefuroxime 89.33%(n=84), imipenem 96%(n=49), pipperacillin/tozabactum 86%(n=50) and nitrofurantoin 89%(n=42).

CONCLUSIONS:

This study shows high resistance towards some 3rd generation cephlosporins, fluroquinalones, and sulphonamides. Which are in the empirical treatment of recent anti-microbial use guidelines by Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR)2017 by using AMR surveillance data of 2014 . Which creates a huge necessity to re-evaluate its recent antimicrobial use guidelines 2017 for urinary tract infection caused by E.coli.
