OBJECTIVES: Community pharmacies are readily patronized by patients with varying levels of ill health due to proximity, nonpayment of consultation fee and ease of access to their services. Health promotion activities abound in most viable community pharmacies. This study investigated the predominant pharmaceutical care services obtainable in community pharmacies to generate baseline and evidence-based data for further studies. METHODS: A cross sectional survey of registered community pharmacists who gave their informed consent to participate in the study was carried out. Only community pharmacists who have practiced in the metropolis for more than one year and gave their informed consent participated in the study. Data was obtained with structured and validated self administered questionnaire. The study lasted from March 2017 to September 2017. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean, mode, and standard deviation. RESULTS: Overall, 87 registered community pharmacists participated in the study, 7.0 (8.1%) had first degree and 80.0 (91.9%) had postgraduate degrees. The descriptive statistics of respondents’ scores ranged from a minimum value of 20%, maximum of 100.0%, and a mean of 58.82±15.98. Referral services had a mean score of 42.96±21.18 with a maximum score of 100%. Patients’ consultations had a mean score of 63.51±21.55 with a mean score of 100%. Patients’ education and counseling mean score was 68.39±29.55, 25.0% minimum score and 100% maximum score. Use of instruments/devices in patient care had a mean score of 72.09±16.95 with a minimum score of 25.0% and maximum value of 100%. CONCLUSIONS: The study underscored the expanded roles of community pharmacists in public health services and health promotion in our localities. They render varying degrees of pharmaceutical care services.
