THE 2012 UPDATED BEERS CRITERIA IN FALLS RELATED HOSPITALIZATION IN OLDER ADULTS

OBJECTIVES: Falls are one of the leading causes of hospitalization in elderly. One of the main risk factors for falls is exposure to Potentially Inappropriate Medications (PIMs). The 2012 Beers Criteria was developed to identify PIMs that should be avoided in elderly. However, this criterion has yet to be endorsed in local Singapore setting. This study aims to investigate the applicability of the 2012 Beers Criteria to identify PIMs that increase risk of falls leading to hospitalization among the elderly in our setting; and review for any changes in prescribing practices regarding PIMs use after admission for falls. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted for patients aged ≥ 65 years, hospitalized at Singapore General Hospital between 1st June 2011 and 31stDec 2011. Cases were patients admitted for falls and controls were those admitted for other diagnoses. Baseline patient demographics obtained from patients’ electronic medical records included gender, age, race, medical history and prescribed medications before and after admission.
