HEALTH ECONOMICS ANALYSES FOR MEDICAL DEVICES IN ASIA- A LITERATURE REVIEW

OBJECTIVES: To review and evaluate published papers with Health Economics Analysis targeting medical devices in Asian countries. METHODS: We examined published papers which included Health Economics Analysis (HEA) (cost-benefit analysis/cost effectiveness analysis/cost-utility analysis) from the PubMed, US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, excluding case reports, editorial, guideline, letter, review and comment. We focused on HEAs pertaining to medical devices in Asian countries, which included equipment, supplies and joint prostheses as medical devices published between 2000 and 2014. RESULTS: We identified 33,939 published HEAs in medical devices and non-medical Devices. Of these medical devices represented 9.7% of all HEAs. HEAs for joint prostheses represented 2.1% of all HEAs. The number of HEAs overall has increased from 1,734 in 2000 to 3,348 in 2014. The number of HEAs of medical devices has increased from 148 in 2000 to 379 in 2014, and the number of joint prostheses has also increased from 27 in 2000 to 92 in 2014. In Asia, the number of HEAs overall has increased from 15 in 2000 to 89 in 2014.
