ESTIMATING UTILITIES FOR LIVER DISEASES USING STANDARD GAMBLE METHOD

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to estimate utility of liver disease-related health states in Korean general population using standard gamble method. METHODS: Hypothetical health states on several liver diseases including chronic hepatitis B & C, liver cirrhosis, liver cancers were devloped based on patient education materials, literature review and expert consultations. Each health state description included symptom, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Four hundred seven of general public from Korea evaluated these health states using visual analogue scale and standard gamble method. This survey was conducted in face-to-face interview with well-trained interviewers using a computer program after informed consent. RESULTS: According to the VAS, the health state with the highest utility (0.63) was ‘Chronic hepatitis B virus infection’, and the health state with the lowest utility (0.16) was ‘Liver cancer that requires a palliative therapy’. SG revealed that the health state with the highest utility (0.82) was ‘Chronic hepatitis B virus infection’, and the health state with the lowest utility (0.39) was ‘Liver cancer that requires a palliative therapy’. CONCLUSIONS: Utilities in several liver diseases were estimated in this study using standard gamble method. These utilities can be used in liver disease relative decision making of patients or physicians and calculation of quality adjusted life years for cost-utility analysis.
