OBJECTIVES: Asthma is a chronic obstructive airway disease characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm that is a serious burden on healthcare due to morbidity and mortality. The utilization cost of antiasthmatic drugs were compared in drug therapy using established pharmacoeconomic modules. In this study of pharmacoeconomics; quality care and trends in management of disease indicated by prescribed medicines were assessed.  METHODS: The prescriptions were made at University Health Center as well as at the tertiary care University hospital. The study incorporated value of drugs not available in health center and subject to genuine reimbursement. The epidemiologic indicators e.g. physician’s name, department of treatment, sex, age, diagnosis, generic and brand name of drugs, drug dosage and frequency were accounted.  RESULTS: In this study 100 prescriptions were analyzed with 475 drugs prescribed where average number of drugs per prescription was 4.75. Most commonly encountered antiasthmatic drugs were Formoterol fumerate (6mcg), Montelukast sodium (10mg), Levocetirizine dihydrochloride (5 mg), Fluticasone propionate (250mcg),  Budesonide (400 mcg). Most of the drugs were prescribed by brand names. The frequency of drug categories consumed, its magnitude as well as preferences for manufacturing brands was also analyzed in the reimbursement pattern and found significant as per the statistical analysis.  CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests judicious choice of common medicines may maximize the economy of healthcare and successful therapy of bronchial asthma. Economical options among antiasthmatic drugs or generic drugs is critical to reduce the expenditure of individual as well as University health care system.
