OBJECTIVES:: To estimate the Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) cost of illness for Colombia from a time horizon of 5 years and a third payer perspective.
METHODS::
METHODS::
We estimated the Incidence of ACS as the number of patients seen in the emergency department during 2015 (ICD I20 to I25)/Population projected by the National Administrative Department of Statistics, mortality as the deaths/live_people projected people by age and gender, and prevalence as the cumulative survival during the 5 years. Resource consumption of the ACS management were estimated from the Survey of management strategies in ACS (Access report), the cost were adjusted from the reported prices on the tariff manual of medical, surgical and hospital procedures (SOAT) and the system of information of prices of medicines (SISMED).
RESULTS:: During 2015, 130,668 people were attended for an ACS. The mortality rate was 75.81 x 100,000 inhabitants ≥ 18 year of age, with a lethality of 27.7%. The estimated costs of the acute care on ACS for the year 2016 were € 493 millions of EUR (exchange rate adjusted to 31 December 2016). Given a reported total public expenditure in Colombia during 2015 of € 75.78 millions of EUR, and a total expenditure on health as % of GDP during 2015 of 7.2%, the ACS consume more than 9% of total health expenditures. We project an incidence of 495 ACS x 1,000 inhabitants during the five years (2016-2020), whit a prevalence of 267 x 1.000 people ≥ 18 Years old of age; and a cumulative mortality and Costs of 190 deaths x 1.000 ACS and 1,328 Millions of EUR. CONCLUSIONS:: The ACS was identified as a main budget agent for Colombia; without intervention, there is expected that population aging, rice of cardiovascular diseases precursors (dyslipidemia, smoke, obesity, diabetes, etc.), associated cost of ambulatory and disability therapies, would increase this expenditure on time.Conference/Value in Health Info
