OBJECTIVES: To assess the 6-month clinical and functioning outcomes of risperidone long-acting injection (RLAI) treatment in patients enrolled in the electronic-Schizophrenia Treatment Adherence Registry (e-STAR) from Korea. METHODS: e-STAR is an international, long-term, prospective, observational study of patients with schizophrenia who initiate RLAI treatment during their routine clinical management. Data are collected retrospectively for 1 year and prospectively every 3 months for 2 years. Clinical outcomes measured by Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) scale and patient functioning assessed by Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale. RESULTS: To date, 162 patients enrolled in e-STAR from Korea and 127 were followed for 6 months; of which 109 patients with baseline and at least one follow-up CGI and GAF data were included in this interim analysis. Mean age was 36.8±11.4 years old with 49.5% of male and mean time since diagnosis was 8.4±7.1 years. Most frequent reasons for initiating on RLAI were lack of compliance with previous therapy (45.0%) and need for maintenance (27.5%). Mean dose of RLAI was 28.0 mg at baseline and 32.8 mg at 6 months. At 6 months, 81.7% (89 out of 109) still continued on RLAI. For all 109 patients, mean CGI score was significantly improved from 3.88±0.95 at baseline to 3.21±0.91 at 6-months (p<0.001). The percentage of patients with not ill/very mild/mild illness increased from 38.6% to 70.6% (p<0.001) and with marked/severe/extremely severe decreased from 22.0% to 9.1% (p<0.001). Mean GAF score improved significantly from 54.6±15.6 at baseline to 63.3±13.7 at 6 months (p<0.001).CONCLUSIONS: This 6-month interim data from Korea show that patients with schizophrenia initiated on risperidone long-acting injection experienced significant improvements in disease severity and functioning.
