EFFECT OF DISEASE AWARENESS COMMUNICATION OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV) VACCINE ON PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS AND VACCINATION DECISION

OBJECTIVES: This study aims: 1) to examine public perception and attitude towards the disease awareness communication (DAC) of Human Papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines on health belief, and observe health behavioral effects, and 2) toon health belief, and observe health behavioral effects; 2) to examine the appropriateness of decisions on HPV vaccination. on health belief, and observe health behavioral effects; and 3) to METHODS: The postal survey was conducted among 2000 women aged between 12-45 years old women in Bangkok. As guided by Health Belief Model (HBM), developed questionnaire included questions concerning socioeconomic information, risk behaviors, knowledge about disease and vaccine, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to actions, and vaccination decision. RESULTS: Disease awareness was significantly higher among women received DAC compared to those who did not receive such communications. However, there were false perceived benefits of the vaccine among those received DAC. Cues to actions regarding DAC and doctors’ recommendations played a significant part for those decided to get HPV vaccine. Regardless of their risk behaviors and perceived susceptibility, women with higher education and income were more likely to pay for the vaccination. CONCLUSIONS: DAC of HPV vaccine had a significant effect on health belief and health behavioral of participants. These findings supported the evidence to Thai Food and Drug Administration to develop a more comprehensive regulation on DAC in Thailand.
