DEVELOPMENT OF THAI HEALTH TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT DATABASE

OBJECTIVES: The study aims to develop the health technology assessment database in Thailand. METHODS: The health technology assessment project has been developed by Ganesh SAP Research Unit, Silpakorn University in collaboration with Health Intervention Technology Assessment Program (HITAP). The project is divided into three phases. The first phase is the development of database structure. Potential users were invited to participate focus group process. The second phase is the literature review and evaluation. Researchers reviewed literatures published during 1990 to present. All literatures met the criteria were included in the database. The last phase is the database implementation and evaluation. RESULTS: The information for database structure was collected from focus group process. Three types of studies were required for the database. They are: 1) economic evaluation studies i.e. cost-minimization analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and cost-utility analysis: 2) outcome assessment studies i.e. randomize controlled trials; and 3) quantitative measured quality of life studies. All studies conducted within Thai context and publish either in Thai or English from Thai and international journals, dissertation, independent studies, and reports, are eligible for inclusion in the database. In addition, a quality evaluation of economic evaluation studies is presented. The database has been available online since January 2008. The usefulness of the database will be further evaluated. CONCLUSIONS:The health technology assessment database includes helpful information and is beneficial for healthcare decision makers, practitioners and researchers. The database will be further developed and added value for the users to enable them to evaluate the quality of research articles before using the results.
