OBJECTIVES: From 2004, utilization of Drug-Eluting Stents (DES) has been increased in Korea and there still has been controversy surrounding outcomes between DES and BMS. The aim of this study was to compare clinical outcomes between them using an administrative data.  METHODS: We analyzed data of 20,651 patients who performed in DES and BMS from 2004 National Health Insurance claim data. The patients were followed up to 2006. Death rate, events rate of acute myocardial infarction(AMI), stroke, ST, and revascularization(ballon angioplasty, stenting, CABG) were employed as outcome variables.  RESULTS: Compared with two groups, 65.4% (13,508) of patients were male and 29.48%(6,088) of patients treated with BMS. Cumulative death rates (BMS; 2.04%, DES; 1.02% ), AMI event rates (BMS; 36.15%, DES; 34.80) and revascularization rates(BMS; 6.62%, DES; 4.84%) were lower in the DES than in the BMS group. Stroke rates (9.72% for BMS vs. 10.45% for DES) and ST rates(1.74% for BMS vs. 2.09% for DES) was higher in the group with DES than BMS.  CONCLUSIONS: The outcomes of DES were superior to BMS in some variables (eg. Death rates, AMI event rates, revascularization rates). There is controversial argument about efficacy of BMS. Since we attempted to draw an overall picture of outcome of coronary stents, results of this study were very restricted. Further study using a real world data should be needed.
