DESCRIPTION: Recommendation for use and reimbursement of vaccines as a preventative intervention are typically not made by the same decision makers as for treatment of diseases and the economic evaluation of vaccines should reflect these differences. Recently there has been the recognition that cost-effectiveness analyses of vaccines need to use a population rather than an individual perspective and may need to consider other long term benefits or financial gains afforded to society, such as increased tax revenue, from a healthier population. ISPOR has recently approved the “Economic Evaluation of Vaccines Designed to Prevent Infectious Disease: Good Practices” Task Force to provide researchers and health care decision makers with an understanding of different types of economic analysis for vaccines including, but not limited to, cost-effectiveness analysis. The Task Force report will provide a set of recommendations for good practice for performing and presenting each type of analysis. This forum will present a brief overview of the different methods and issues such as discounting and outcomes to be discussed by the Task Force. The forum will then solicit input from vaccine developers and vaccine decision makers and government and private payers regarding the information that is most useful to them in making decisions about the development and use of vaccines.
