OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine Body Mass Index (BMI) distributions among Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), pre-diabetes (PD) and non-diabetic populations (ND), and compare BMI distributions according to age, gender, and race. METHODS: Using the GE Centricity EMR database, a cross-sectional analysis was conducted in adults with BMI measurements between 10/1/2013 – 9/30/2014. Index BMI was defined as the average of all BMI results during study period. T2D and PD were identified by existence of ICD-9 codes. In ND, individuals with T1D codes were excluded. BMI distribution curves were constructed across all BMI levels for 3 populations. BMI distributions according to age, gender and race were also examined. RESULTS: Mean BMI (kg/m) for T2D, PD and ND were 32.7, 31.1, and 28.5, respectively. The percentages with BMI ≥30 were 63% for T2D, 53% for PD and 37% for ND. In T2D and PD, increased age was associated with fewer individuals with BMI ≥30: 76% for ages 18-44, 72% for ages 45-64, and 54% for ages ≥65. However, in ND, ages 18-44 (34%) and ages ≥65 (32%) had lower percentages with BMI ≥30 compared with ages 45-64 (42%). More males than females had BMI 25-<35 (T2D, 61% vs 50%; PD, 67% vs 53%; ND, 65% vs 48%). In T2D and PD, ages 18-44 females had the highest percentages with BMI > BMI levels in Black individuals were higher than in White and Other races. Percentages with BMI ≥30 for Blacks, Whites and Others were 66%/64%/50% for T2D, 64%/53%/44% for PD, 50%/36%/30% for ND. Gender/age BMI distribution trends were similar in each race subgroup to those seen overall. Ages 18-44 black female T2D individuals comprised the largest sub-population (82%) with BMI >30. CONCLUSIONS: T2D/PD, Blacks, females and younger ages were generally associated with higher BMI.
