USING STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODEL TO EVALUATE PATIENT SATISFACTION TO A PHARMACIST-LED MEDICATION EDUCATION SERVICE FOR ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION

OBJECTIVES : The present study employed a survey and built the model to measure satisfaction for a pharmacist-led medication education program for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. The specific aims included to analyze: (a) patient satisfaction toward to this program; (b) the impacts of different demographics on patient satisfaction; (c) the factorial structure of the four constructs by Parasurman, Zeithmal, and Berry (PZB) method and structural equation modeling. METHODS : Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, 1-Way Multivariate Analysis of Variance, and structural equation modeling were applied. RESULTS : A medical center in Northern Taiwan distributed 275 questionnaires, whilst 259(94.19%)were replied and 236(85.82%)were effective. The major results included: (a) the majority of patients were male (72.5%), aged from 45 to 54 (36.9%) years old, 60% with education above college, and 47.5% taking medicines chronically; (b) the patient satisfaction for pharmaceutical care and medication education pamphlet were 4.90±0.24, 4.81±0.35, respectively; (c) sex, age, and level of education had significant impacts on patient satisfaction; (d) The Partial Least Square–Structural Equation Modeling(PLS SEM) demonstrated that “medication education pamphlet satisfaction”, “pharmacist professional competency” and “pharmacist service satisfaction”, were positively correlated, by the factor structure analysis in both of orthogonal or oblique rotating models. The mediate effect of the “pharmacist professional competency” was also confirmed; (e) the The analysis of PLS-SEM further demonstrated that three out of the PZB four constructs, including “empathy”, “reliability”, “assurance”, were significantly correlated with patient satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS : The present study constructed the first model to measure the satisfaction for pharmacist-led medication education program, assisting pharmacist for enhancing and promoting medication safety in the future.
