SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF DAPAGLIFLOZIN USED TO TREAT PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

The aim of this study is to systematically review all pharmacoeconomic literature on dapagliflozin and to assess the cost-effectiveness of dapagliflozin as an add-on therapy for patients with T2DM. The cost-effectiveness of dapagliflozin is compared with other add-on anti-diabetic medications such as sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors, and pioglitazone. A search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases through August 2017 to identify the cost-effectiveness, cost-utility and cost-benefit studies of dapagliflozin versus other anti-diabetes therapies for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The results demonstrated that metformin, as an add-on to, dapagliflozin was associated with lower costs and quality-adjusted Life Years (QALY) gained when compared to pioglitazone. Adding dapagliflozin to metformin caused an incremental benefit of 0.236-0.278 QALYs. This finding was significant in that it showed that dapagliflozin and metformin were a more cost-effective option in Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Current research indicates that dapagliflozin may be a cost-effective therapy for patients with T2DM compared to other alternatives. The ICERs associated with these studies may suggest that dapagliflozin is a cost-saving choice from payer and policy maker's perspectives.
