BUDGET IMPACT ANALYSIS OF BOSENTAN FOR TREATMENT OF PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH PULMONARY ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION

OBJECTIVES : To perform a budget impact analysis (BIA) of the implementation of bosentan for treatment of pediatric patients, only considering patients between 2-12 years, with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) on the national health system (NHS) of Mexico METHODS : To develop the BIA, a time horizon of 5 years was taken in which we evaluated the use of resources considering two main scenarios: the current scenario, where both support and specific therapy were considered, according to the treatment used by the physicians on public institutions of Mexico, determined by an expert panel; and the potential or future scenario, where the use of bosentan is added to the support and specific therapy. The costs were acquired from institutional costs sources. In addition, a deterministic sensitivity analysis was developed to determine the degree of uncertainty in some parameters. RESULTS : According to the results, the impact of the inclusion of bosentan to the NHS of Mexico is 318,064.56 USD in 2017, and conclude with 1,576,135.12 USD in 2021, which corresponds to 0.008251% and 0.04215% from the percentage of the budget of the NHS, on the first and fifth year, respectively. The average investment considered on the 5 years of the analysis for the inclusion of bosentan is equivalent to 948,449.78 USD, representing the 0.02536% of the budget of the NHS. The deterministic sensitivity analysis confirm that the results were robust. CONCLUSIONS : According to the results of the BIA, the inclusion of bosentan to the NHS of Mexico is displayed as an affordable option for the treatment of pediatric patients (2-12 years) with HAP.
