OBJECTIVES: The relationship between medically assisted reproduction (MAR) use and the risk of major congenital malformations (MCM) is controversial. Multiplicity is a recognized adverse effect of MAR; nevertheless, there is no consensus on the incremental risk. Our meta-analysis summarizes the literature on fertility treatments and risks for the newborn, explains discrepancies between studies, and identifies the gaps in knowledge for future research. METHODS: : We carried out a systematic review to identify published papers between 1966 and 2012 in Medline, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. We included observational studies and randomized clinical trials related to the risk of multiplicity or MCM conceived following ovarian stimulation (OS) alone, intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with related procedures compared to spontaneously conceived infants or infants conceived using other MAR. RESULTS: We identified
