OBJECTIVES: Antithrombotics are used in the therapy of several cardiovascular diseases. Over the past years, new drugs emerged on the Slovak pharmaceutical market. The aim of our study was to evaluate the utilisation of B01A drugs in regards to volume (DID) and sales (EUR). In addition, we compared the proportion of public insurance reimbursement (PIR) and patient’s co-payments (PCP). METHODS: We have compared the utilisation of the main antithrombotic drugs in volume (DID) and sales (EUR) distributed over the period from 2000 to 2014 on the Slovak pharmaceutical market according to the active substance. Additionally, we have evaluated the proportion of PIR and PCP on the overall costs. RESULTS: The utilisation of antithrombotics has increased by 31.5% in volume and by 68.9% in sales. Prasugrel reached the highest utilisation growth in % both in volume (Δ=0.39 DID) and sales (Δ=0.34 billion EUR). The highest utilisation growth in terms of DID reached clopidogrel (Δ=11.61 DID) and dabigatran in EUR (Δ=2.86 billion EUR). Utilisation of indobufen, ticlopidine and the combination of acetylsalicylic acid and dipyridamole decreased both in volume and sales, whereas clopidogrel only in sales. A total of 317.0 billion EUR was spent on antithrombotics from 2010 to 2014, with a 91.9% PIR. There was no time correlation of the PIR and PCP found (R=0.006). The PIR has only slightly oscillated around the average of 91.8% (max.: 95.3%; min.: 89.2%) and likewise the PCP around the average of 8.2% (max. 10.8%; min.:4.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The utilisation of antithrombotics increased more in sales that in volume (68.9% vs. 31.5%) due to a high number of innovative, original drugs. Clopidogrel had the highest growth in DID although the sales have decreased, which reflects the rapid price-decrease. In this group, the PCP is very low, and this hasn’t changed significantly over the evaluated period.
