KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PERCEPTION OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC REGARDING POLIO AND ITS VACCINATION IN KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA, PAKISTAN. A QUALITATIVE STUDY

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the knowledge, attitude and perception of general public about Polio and its Vaccination in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. METHODS: A qualitative approach was used to gain the understanding of general public knowledge in KPK, as it allows a flexible exploration of respondents’ experiences. The study took placed in polio centres and DHQ hospitals in Abbottabad and Mansehra from November 2015 to March 2016, using a semi-structured interview guide, developed after extensive literature review. All the interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analyzed for its content. RESULTS: Among study participants eight were female while twenty five of them were male. Thematic content analysis yielded 3 major themes; a) Information/knowledge of participants about polio and its vaccination, b) Attitude towards polio and its vaccination, c) Perception about polio and its vaccination CONCLUSIONS: Polio eradication from Pakistan is a major health issue for decades and for a better future, it needs to be eradicated as an important component of public health promotion. This study motivates to get the sufficient knowledge about polio and its vaccination that puts sincere efforts on the part of the health professionals and the policy makers.
