OBJECTIVES: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease characterized by a progressive degradation of the joint cartilage. Therefore, the disease progression and associated disabilities may severely impact the patients’ mobility and quality of life. The objectives of this study is to evaluate the impact of GCSC treatment in the symptoms / evolution of OA through the BONe’S (Burden Osteoarthritis New Scale) questionnaire and OA pain relief during 6 months of treatment. METHODS: An observational, prospective, longitudinal study was conducted in Portugal in 2014. Physicians were required to include the first 10 patients to whom they prescribed GCSC and, who also, met the eligibility criteria. Data were collected at inclusion, 3 and 6 months and consisted in demographic characteristics, clinical information, and pain of OA (VAS), BONe’S questionnaire, health status and compliance. RESULTS: A total of 1774 individuals were included and over 95% had follow-up data at 3 months and at 6 months. There were twice as many women than men and mean age was 63.7 ± 11.2 years. There was a statistically significant decrease in BONe’S score from inclusion to 3 months (-12.5 ±11.4, p<.0001) and from inclusion to 6 months (-22.4 ± 17.2, p<.0001). The pain decreased significantly over the treatment with GCSC. Over 90% of patients reported still following the treatment at 3 and 6 months. At 6 months most individuals perceived their condition to be moderately better (39.18%) or much better (38.47%). CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with GCSC appears to be an effective option in real life setting in Portugal to reduce the symptoms and burden associated with OA.
