INTRODUCTION: Patient reported outcomes and specifically health related quality of life are important measures to evaluate the impact of health services in the world. In breast cancer survivor women is important identify the effect of breast reconstruction surgery on this specific issue. OBJECTIVES: To compare the health related quality of life between women with and without breast reconstruction after mastectomy secondary to breast cancer using questionnaires EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23. METHODS: Were selected 122 breast cancer survivor women who were diagnosed with breast cancer clinical stage II, and treated through radical mastectomy between 2008 and 2013, and they were interviewed through questionnaires EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 in a public health system tertiary referral center. Data were linearly transformed and final scores were analyzed through mean and standard deviation or median and interquartile interval, and statistical differences were calculated with Mann-Whitney U or Student T test, p≤0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: CONCLUSIONS: The breast reconstruction after radical mastectomy in the cancer treatment has a profound effect on health related quality of life, enhancing aspects related with global wellbeing and specifically on sexual and body image.
