OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to perform a comparative analysis of the consumption of antipsychotic drugs (APD) used for treatment of schizophrenia in inpatient facilities. METHODS:  A retrospective study of the data on consumption of neuroleptics from the medical records (MR) of the patients diagnosed with schizophrenia was performed on the base of a psychiatric inpatient hospital in Moscow. The consumption of drugs was estimated using the WHO ATC/DDD methodology. RESULTS:  In the consumption volume (DDD/100 bed-days) the total amount of AP consumption decreased by 20% from the year 2012 to 2015 from 194.94 to 156.19 DDD/100 bed-days, while the consumption of atypical antipsychotics (AA) did not change, and the volume of consumption of typical APs and AP of prolonged action decreased by one third compared to the previous period, this suggesting a gradual reduction of the use of the first-generation drugs (TN). The consumption of drugs with the highest indices of DDD/100 bed-days was characterized by a 2-fold decrease in consumption of TN haloperidol of oral DF and APs of sustain-action fluphenazine decanoate. The consumption of AA clozapine, a drug with the highest DDD/100 bed-days index among all studied ones, decreased by 13% from 51.8 to 44.86. Among the AA drugs there was marked a 2-fold increase in consumption of aripiprazole oral, and the consumption of olanzapine oral increased 1.5 times. The consumption of TN chlorpromazine was noted to increase 4 times, while the total consumption volume is insignificant (0.15 - 0.85, respectively, in 2012 and 2015). CONCLUSIONS: It was found that in the studied inpatient hospital the AA consumption remained unchanged, although there was some redistribution of the consumption volume within the AA group, the consumption of TN and sustained-action APs decreased by one third as compared with the previous period.
