BUDGET IMPACT ANALYSIS OF SUCROFERRIC OXYHYDROXIDE IN TREATMENT OF HYPERPHOSPHATEMIA IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

OBJECTIVES:  To conduct budget impact analysis of phosphate binders registered for therapy of patients with hyperphosphatemia with chronic kidney disease in Russia for 1-year period. METHODS: A budget impact model was developed in Excel 2013 to simulate the costs of sucroferric oxyhydroxide compared with sevelamer carbonate, sevelamer hydrochloride, calcium carbonate, calcium acetate, calcium acetate+magnesium carbonate in patients with hyperphosphatemia with chronic kidney disease in Russia for 1-year period. The total number of patients with hyperphospatemia in Russia estimated of 15 244. The following costs were taken into account the cost of drug therapy of hyperphosphatemia, cost for treatment of cardiovascular complications of chronic kidney disease, cost of drug therapy of anemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease, costs for treatment of chronic kidney disease. Costs of pharmacotherapy were taken from the essential drug list and the database of drugs prices. Cost of medical care of diverse complications was taken from the standards of MoH. RESULTS:  According to the budget impact analysis treatment of hyperphosphatemia at the end for 1styear for whole population the least costly treatment scheme is sucroferric oxyhydroxide (22,317,781,830 RUB/337,994,576 $). Costs in sevelamer hydrochloride group equal 23,117,579,546 RUB/350,107,217 $, sevelamer carbonate – 23,117,273,522 RUB/350,102,582 $ в группе calcium carbonate составила 23,959,289,582 RUB/362,854,605 $, calcium acetate – 22,791,295,825 RUB/ 345,165,770 $, calcium acetate+magnesium carbonate – 22,791,381,989 RUB/344,853,714 $. Current rate taken as for 15.06.2016 is 1$ = 66,09 RUB. CONCLUSIONS: Inclusion of sucroferric oxyhydroxide therapy is a cost saving treatment option compared with other phosphate binders registered for therapy of patients with hyperphosphatemia with chronic kidney disease in Russia for 1-year period.
