ESTIMATING THE MONETARY VALUE OF RELIEF OF TENNIS ELBOW: A CONTINGENT VALUATION STUDY OF WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY OBJECTIVES: To estimate the willingness-to-pay (WTP) for symptom relief of tennis elbow and examine whether WTP is related to individual and condition-related characteristics. METHODS: This cross-sectional WTP, contingent valuation sub-study was performed alongside a randomised controlled trial comparing the addition of physiotherapy to corticosteroid injection in 165 participants with tennis elbow. The contingent value scenario constructed required participants to decide the monetary value (AUD) they would pay for a quick and non-invasive new treatment for relief of their elbow condition. Participants were told to consider that their symptoms would persist for the next 12 months if left untreated. The efficacy of this new treatment was defined as complete recovery in 50% of people treated. Two WTP approaches (bidding game and binary response) were administrated in blocks of 15 consecutive participants. For both methods, participants were randomly allocated a starting bid from values of $50, $650, $1250 or $1850.  RESULTS: The bidding game approach was performed in 73 participants. Median WTP estimate was $695 (IQR: 320, $1300) for this approach. WTP was significantly associated with an individual’s gross income, gender, age, resting pain levels and the number of recurrences. The binary response approach was performed in 87 participants. All participants accepted a $50 bid, while more than half accepted $650 and $1250 bids. Using this approach, those participants with a self-reported worsening prognosis were five times more likely to accept proposed single price for hypothetical treatment than those with a stable or improving prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study examined the economic value that participants with tennis elbow ascribe to relief of their condition. The relationship between this monetary value with individual and condition-related characteristics was also demonstrated.
