BACKGROUND:

Asthma; a chronic inflammatory disease of airways is characterized by hyper-reactivity of airways resulting in bronchial obstruction.

OBJECTIVES:

The present study aimed to access the impact of pharmacist led educational intervention upon the quality of life in adult asthma patients.

METHODS:

A total of 207 asthma patients underwent educational intervention led by pharmacist. The intervention involved educating adult asthmatics regarding dietary modifications, necessity of cholesterol level control, pollen season precautions, avoiding trigger factors for allergic asthma and workout/exercise modifications. A generic pre-validated Urdu Pakistan version of health EQ-5D, 5 levels was used for exploring and examining the quality of life of patients. Originally, the QoL of patients was accessed at baseline. It was followed by the pharmacist led intervention. The post intervention visit was scheduled after 3 months, to observe the differences in QoL of asthmatics.

RESULTS:

The data analysis was done using the SPSS version 24. A p-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. All domains of EQ-5D 5L questionnaire on quality of life was significantly improved (p<0.05) after pharmacist led educational intervention in the study. The mean score of patients reported quality of life on Visual Analogue Scale (VAS scale) were improved from 49.67±8.64 to 68.43±5.67 after pharmacist intervention in study participants in quality of life since baseline.

CONCLUSIONS:

The effect of pharmacist involvement in the form of intervention provision a positive improvement with statistically significant enhancement on every domain of the EQ-5D 5L.
