OBJECTIVES: Coverage decisions require robust information conveyed in an impactful manner to resonate with decision makers. This research aimed to understand the different perspectives and impact of interactive digital epidemiology and economic model tools to enhance effective communication between payers and pharmaceutical field teams, such as medical sciences liaisons (MSLs).

METHODS: Using qualitative and quantitative questions (rated on scale from 1 (not useful) to 7 (very useful), perceptions of traditional epidemiology funnels (EF) and economic tools, including budget impact models (BIM) and cost calculators (CC), were evaluated. Interviewees were then shown prototypes of digital interactive EF, BIM, and CC before repeating the initial rating questions.

RESULTS: Both payers and MSLs felt EF are useful (payers = 3.5; MSL = 4.8), particularly in rare/orphan and oncology therapeutic areas where limited data are available, and EF can also be helpful with forecasting. Both payers and MSLs found lower utility with BIM (payers = 2.6; MSL = 4.5) due to model complexity, lack of customization, and skepticism of industry developed BIMs. All interviewees indicated the digital interactive CC and EF added value to existing BIM (payers = 5.3; MSL = 5.25) and EF (payers = 5.3; MSL = 5.75). Payers indicated interactive digital CC and EF provided more flexibility to alter information specific to plan population and promoted increased transparency. MSLs stated interactive digital CC and EF were more visually appealing and could improve storytelling compared to traditional Excel-based BIMs.

CONCLUSIONS: This research highlights the differences in perceived usefulness of value communication tools and where digital tools may increase alignment and enhance decision-making. Both parties embraced the more transparent, visual and flexible approach to communicating EF and CC data. Interactive, digital epidemiology and cost calculator formats were well received and stated as a solution that can better enable informed decision-making.
