OBJECTIVES: Psoriasis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease, with manifestations mainly in the skin and joints. The objective of this analysis was to characterize the main sociodemographic variables related to psoriasis care in Colombia.

METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study was performed. Data were extracted from the Integrated Social Protection Information System (SISPRO) through the Individual Health Service Provision Records (RIPS) on April 30, 2020. Cases were identified using ICD-10 Codes: L400, L401, L404, L408 y L409 across 2016, 2017 and 2018.

RESULTS: 56,997 psoriasis cases were identified between 2016 and 2018. 51% were men and the highest number of cases ranged between 53 and 57 years (9,782 cases). 23% 21% of the cases were in Antioquia. Consultations and medical procedures (laboratory tests, X-rays, phototherapy) were the most frequent types of health care visits nationwide. In Antioquia, medical consultations for psoriasis increased by 58% in 2018 and in Bogotá by 42%, compared to 2016. Medical procedures increased by 79% in Antioquia and 67% in Bogotá in 2018 compared to 2016. 22,158 patients were in a contributory regime (insurance regime for formal workers and people with capacity to pay) and 7,047 in a subsidized regime (regime for unemployed, informal sector workers and the poor) in 2018. In 2018, for every 4 health care visits provided under the contributory regime, only 1 was provided under the subsidized regime. The health institutions in Colombia with the highest numbers of psoriasis cases treated between 2016 and 2018 are EPS Sura, Nueva EPS and Salud Total.

CONCLUSION: Psoriasis, a chronic disease with a pattern of relapses and remissions, and high psychological and social impact, requires special attention in health services. The numbers of psoriasis cases have increased significantly in Colombia over the years and in turn, greater need for care and use of health resources.
