OBJECTIVES: To explore the level of awareness regarding CKD condition, its medications, dietary risks and laboratory investigations among nephrology and urology patients of Quetta.

METHODS: The cross-sectional study was used by adopting and culturally modifying a questionnaire to collect the data. By convenient sampling technique a total of 500 questionnaires were administered to inpatients, outpatients and dialysis patients randomly, 468 responses were selected which makes the response rate of 93.6%. Descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and reliability analysis was performed on SPSS v25.

RESULTS: Majority 50.3% (n=235) were unaware of symptoms which will develop due to worsening of disease, while 56.2% were unaware of what aggravates their kidney function and majority 47.4% (n=222) of respondents know nothing about long-term prognosis of the disease. Majority of the respondents 50.5% (n=248) don’t know about the names and usage of medications, while 55.5% (n=260) don’t know about the roles of medications, and 62.4% (n=292) were unaware of the medicines which may impair kidney function, more than half 57.9% (n=271) were aware about the exercise for their fitness. A strong association between awareness and patient education level was found (p<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS: Awareness regarding disease condition, medications and laboratory investigations of CKD among nephrology and urology patients of Quetta was found out to be poor. Disseminating the information about CKD in general public can improve awareness among community and lessen the burden of disease on healthcare system.
