OBJECTIVES : Despite recent advances, there remains a need to improve treatment options and survival outcomes for patients with hematological malignancies. Considerable research is ongoing to develop advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) in this disease area. Some ATMPs have already received regulatory apprvoal and the number of therapeutic options and range of indications approved will probably increase in coming years. Research objective is to estimate number of Irish patients with hematological malignancies who may benefit from ATMPs in a 5-year period, 2021 - 2025.

METHODS : Citeline® database was used to identify clinical trials which had the potential to support product registration or indication expanison for ATMPs in hematological malignancies. Eligible patient numbers were sourced and adapted from National Cancer Registry of Ireland (NCRI) pbulications. Clinical uptake estimates were sourced from HTA reports, where available.

RESULTS : Total estimated hematology patients who could benefit from ATMPs during the period evaluated is 311. This increases from 24 patients in 2021 to 113 patients in 2025. Of the malignancies evaluated, its estimated that the largest number of patients who could benefit will be in multiple myeloma (31% of total estimated population) and non-Hodgkins lymphoma (29%). The remainder of patients identified were in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (19%), mantle cell lymphoma (11%) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (4%).

CONCLUSIONS : The number of patients with hematological malignancies who could benefit from ATMPs in Ireland is estimated to increase steadily over a 5-year period. This research provides useful estimates for healthcare decision makers and can help inform future decisions on resource allocations. Continued investment in both health system capacity and new medicines funding will be required to ensure that Irish hematology patients have an equitable opportunity to access and benefit from global advances in healthcare.
