Patient Preferences and Feedback Regarding Daily Reporting of COVID-19 Symptoms Using Personal Smartphones for the Obvio-19 Study

OBJECTIVES: Remote collection of accurate daily symptoms from patients at home during the COVID-19 pandemic is the key to an effective intervention and important for safety of the general public and in easing the healthcare burden. METHODS: Participants in a COVID-19 registrational study were provided the Obvio-19 app to use on their personal smartphones to report their COVID-19 symptoms and disease status daily. RESULTS: There were 804 participants enrolled in this prospective observational study; 47 participants were positive for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) or 5.8% of the study population. Participants’ used their smartphones consisting of 34.0% Android, 35.4% iOS, and 30.6% unidentified. Daily questionnaires (n=44,129) were completed and a subset (n=30) of participants have thus far provided feedback about their experience. Participants reported that using the app was “very easy” (4.66 + 0.75 on a 5-point scale with 5 as “very easy”) and responding to questions regarding their COVID-19 symptoms everyday was found to be “easily manageable” (4.79 + 0.67 on a 5-point scale with 5 as “easily manageable”). Overall, 97% of participants reported that it took less than 2 minutes to complete their electronic daily COVID-19 symptoms diaries. When asked if it was easier or harder to use the smartphone app versus paper to provide data on their symptoms, 93% of participants said that the app was easier, while the remaining 7% indicated that both experiences were about the same. CONCLUSIONS: To date, this study demonstrates that participants found it “very easy” and convenient to report on their COVID-19 symptoms using an app on their personal smartphone and that such technology provides an efficient and effective means of accurately and safely obtaining data directly from patients.
