VISUALIZING THE IMMUNIZATION RATES IN NIGERIA: MAPPING THE CRISIS TO TARGET RESOURCES ALLOCATION

OBJECTIVES Preventable diseases are a significant factor that influences the high rate of these mortalities observed in the WHO African region, particularly those preventable by proper and complete. In fact, more than 10 million deaths from 2010 to 2015 are preventable by vaccination worldwide, according to a 10-year review published by the WHO. This observation is confirmed by the low and decreasing immunization coverage estimates published by the WHO’s monitoring and surveillance data. Nigeria has the lowest immunization coverage, with 70% of the population not vaccinated, representing an approximated 3 million people, according to WHO data. Therefore, the goal of this study is to identify, geographically, the regions with the lowest immunization rates. METHODS: Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) datasets, made publicly available by USAID were used. A cross-sectional analysis of secondary data was performed using the 2018 data. A mapping software (ArcGIS) was used to map the regions with the lowest immunization rates in the country in 2013 and 2018. We visually identified the regions that needed urgent attention using maps produced with country-specific variables. RESULTS The analysis displays the change in immunization rates from 2013 to 2018 and the most affected regions taking into consideration population size, demographics, and economic factors. “High need” regions were identified in a series of maps. CONCLUSIONS To increase the efficiency of the “Expanded Program of Immunization in Nigeria,” the implementing party should focus resources on the outreach to regions of the country identified as “high need.”
