ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF ANASEPT® (ANTIMICROBIAL SKIN & WOUND CLEANSER) FOR WOUND TREATMENT IN MEXICO

OBJECTIVES. Acute and chronic wounds are a challenge to wound care professionals and consume a great deal of healthcare resources around the globe. Anasept® is used to prevent and treat skin and tissue infections that could result from cuts, scrapes, diabetic foot and pressure sores. It is also used before and after surgery to prevent surgical wound infections. Anasept® demonstrates exceptionally rapid microbiocidal action. Most pathogenic organisms are killed within 2 minutes or less following application. There are no known microbial resistance to Anasept® including the antibiotic resistance strains of MRSA, VRE, CRE, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Clostridium difficile. The objective of this study is to assess the Economic Efficiency of Anasept® vs super-oxidized water with neutral pH for acute and chronic wounds in Mexico, from the institutional perspective.

METHODS. A cost minimization analysis was conducted to assess expected treatment costs for Acute and Chronic Wounds. The costs evaluated included the costs of super-oxidized water with neutral pH and Anasept® for each type of wound. The time horizon measured was different for acute and chronic wounds (acute 2 applications every day for 7 days, chronic 2 applications per day for 21 days). No discount rate was considered due to the intervention is within one year. The costs are presented in USD.

RESULTS. The costs per patient in the treatment of acute and chronic wounds were lower when managed with Anasept®. In average the cost of Anasept® was 43% lower. For acute wounds $5.97 [$5.37-$6.57] vs $10.39 [$9.35-$11.43]), in chronic wounds $17.91 [$16.11-$19.70] vs $31.17 [$28.05-$34.29]). Anasept® generates savings comparable to the cost of treat wounds with super-oxidized water with neutral pH.

CONCLUSIONS. Anasept® is an Economically efficient alternative to treat Acute and chronic wounds from different etiology. Anasept® generates important savings for public health institutions in Mexico when compare to super-oxidized water with neutral pH.
