ABSTRACT WITHDRAWN

OBJECTIVES : To know the impact of various factors affecting blood pressure i.e, Age, Gender, Food habits, BMI, Smoking and Alcoholic habits.

METHODS : It is a community based cross sectional study carried out in Northern Telangana region. Questionnaire was designed based on sociodemographic data and factors affecting blood pressure, including a population ≥18 years of age. Clinical measurements obtained are weight, height, BP. Statistical Analysis was done using SPSS software, pearson’s correlation and one sample kruskalwallis test.

RESULTS : Of 1040 subjects (male-415, female-625) participated in the study. Impact of progression in age on SBP mean-115.14, SD-17.52, CC-0.48; DBP mean-81.5, SD-10.2, CC-0.31; both with p value 0.0001. BP varied among male (SBP mean-119.97, SD-18.32) (DBP mean-84.49, SD-10.03); female (SBP mean-112.31, SD-16.28) (DBP mean-79.52, SD-9.83). BP variation among vegetarians-37 (SBP mean-119.57, SD-8.7, p value-0.42) (DBP mean-79.16, SD-7.43, p value-0.47) and non-vegetarians-1003 (SBP mean-115.21, SD-17.75, p value-0.0001) (DBP mean-81.59, SD-10.28, p value-0.018). BP among alcoholics-263 (SBP mean-122.54, SD-17.76, p value-0.0001) (DBP mean-85.48, SD-10.51, p value-0.016) and non-alcoholics-777 (SBP mean-112.93, SD-16.8, p value-0.001) (DBP mean-80.15, SD-17.8, p value-0.007). BP among non-smokers-1018 (SBP mean-115.12, SD-17.44, p value-0.0001) (DBP mean-81.47, SD-10.16, p value-0.023) and smokers-22 (SBP mean-126.82, SD-18.07, p value-0.49) (DBP mean-83.09, SD-12.17, p value-0.331). Subjects with BMI of 30 - 34.99 are having highest SBP 123.34, DBP 86.72 and lowest SBP 106.51 and DBP 76.41 in BMI of <16. Impact of BMI on SBP mean-115.14, SD-17.52, CC=0.26, and DBP mean-81.5, SD-10.2, CC-0.214, p value 0.0001.

CONCLUSIONS : Our study showed a proportional raise between BP and age, BMI; also showed strong impact of alcohol habits on raise of BP. Our findings include raised BP amongst vegetarians and no association of BP with smoking habits. The study highlighted the importance of knowing exact clinical factor, other co-founding variables in an individual for more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
