OBJECTIVES: The changing migratory landscape in recent years demands new approaches to healthcare for these populations in Chile. Understanding healthcare teams viewpoints, especially those directly involved in providing care to them, is essential for developing a conceptual framework for intercultural health with migrants. We aimed to describe the opportunities for improvement in the care of migrants identified by healthcare teams in Chile

METHODS: A quantitative survey was conducted using RedCap platform. The survey was administered to healthcare teams serving migrant populations in the communes of Antofagasta, La Granja, Valparaíso, and Temuco (N=474). Data on professional characteristics, healthcare system and intercultural health were collected. Frequency measures were used. Financed by FONIS SA19I0066, ANID-Chile.

RESULTS: Of the total respondents, 43.7% indicated that healthcare for migrants could be improved in terms of the quality of care, including treatment delivery and waiting times. 77.2% of respondents believed that cultural relevance and appropriateness of care, including language, could be improved. 51.3% of respondents suggested that formal access to healthcare and addressing access gaps could be enhanced. 27.6% of respondents felt that the availability of healthcare facilities and services could be improved. Suggestions for improvement included increasing intercultural facilitators, hiring multilingual staff, psychosocial education, training on various migration-related topics, promoting empathy, producing educational materials, and training on specific syndromes or conditions, among others.

CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare teams identify areas for improvement, particularly in terms of treatment, cultural appropriateness, and formal access. They emphasize the need to develop specific recommendations at different stages of the healthcare process, as well as to listen to migrants needs.
