OBJECTIVES: Chikungunya, a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, is emerging as a significant public health concern worldwide. This study aimed to assess the global burden of chikungunya in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and economic costs.
METHODS: A comprehensive review was conducted to identify epidemiological studies, surveillance reports, and other relevant data sources related to chikungunya between 2011 and 2020. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) modelling framework was employed to estimate the burden of chikungunya in terms of DALYs, which combine years of life lost due to premature mortality and years lived with disability. In addition, economic costs associated with chikungunya were evaluated, including healthcare expenditures, productivity losses, and societal impacts.
RESULTS: Findings from the study suggest a considerable burden of chikungunya with over 8 million reported cases between 2011 and 2020 worldwide. The estimated DALYs associated with chikungunya reveal the significant impact of the disease on both mortality and morbidity. The majority of costs and health burden was originating from long term sequelae caused by chikungunya infection.
CONCLUSIONS: This global burden of disease study on chikungunya highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive understanding of the disease's impact on population health and economic resources. The results indicate a substantial burden in terms of DALYs and economic costs. The findings from this study will serve as a vital resource for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and researchers working towards mitigating the burden of chikungunya and implementing effective prevention and control strategies such as vaccination.
