Can Risk Management Practices Foster the Role of Big Data and Data Analytics in Improving the Quality of Healthcare Services? Evidence From a Survey Among Healthcare Professionals

OBJECTIVES: The development of new technologies and their adoption enable the collection, analysis and exploitation of data for decision-making. Data can play an important role in the healthcare industry since it is a complex system where each decision is affected by risk and uncertainty. This study investigates the role of big data and data analytics in supporting the risk management practices and the quality of healthcare services delivery from the healthcare professional perspective in Italian healthcare organizations, using the lens of organizational information processing theories (OIPT).
METHODS: We designed and administered a questionnaire to healthcare professionals from various Italian hospitals
. The sample of hospitals was selected to be representative of Italy by selecting the five largest hospitals in each Italian region by the number of inpatient beds. The collected data are analysed using the structural equation modelling (SEM) methodology in order to unveil the relations between the constructs of the research model.RESULTS: The results unveiled the relationship between the effect of using big data and data analytics to face the risk and uncertainty in delivering high-quality healthcare services. Furthermore, the findings reveal also the role of risk management practices (i.e., risk identification, risk assessment, risk treatment and risk monitoring) in fostering the quality of healthcare services.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this study contributes to the extant literature about the use of data to support the decision-making process in healthcare by providing an empirical assessment of the healthcare professional perspective on the use of data to improve the quality of healthcare services and the role of risk management practices in pursuing it, while it contributes to the practitioners perspective by providing guidance about the current use of data-driven technologies in the healthcare decision-making context.
