OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to suggest the HRQOL difference between people with and without disabilities and among six types of disabilities in Vietnam.
METHODS: Data of 479 PWD and 419 people from the general population (GP) was collected via a phone-based survey during December 2021 in three mega cities in Vietnam. HRQOL was obtained using a validated EQ-5D-5L instrument for Vietnamese. HRQOL outcomes were presented as an EQ-5D-5L value and an EQ-VAS score. Descriptive analysis and age-sex weighted univariate regression were applied to capture the HRQOL difference among groups of people with/out: (1) disabilities, (2) vision disabilities, (3) hearing disabilities, (4) mobility disabilities, (5) self-care disabilities, (6) communication disabilities and (7) cognitive disabilities.
RESULTS: EQ-5D-5L values were reported at 0.95 and 0.72 and PWD, respectively. PWD would have 0.24 point lower of EQ-5D-5L value compared to GP (95%CI [-0.27; -0.21]). Means EQ-VAS were 86.23 and 64.74 for GP and PWD, respectively. PWD would have 21.49 point lower of EQ-VAS compared to GP (95%CI [-24.12; -18.86]). Among people with different types of disabilities, the EQ-5D-5L values and EQ-VAS were reported statistically lower among people with mobility disabilities (βvalue= -0.26, 95%CI [-0.31; -0.21]; βVAS= -11.04, 95%CI [-15.25; -6.82]), self-care disabilities (βvalue= -0.39, 95%CI [-0.49; -0.29]; βVAS= -23.64, 95%CI [-30.98; -16.30]) and cognition disabilities (βvalue= -0.10, 95%CI [-0.19; -0.02]; βVAS= -11.30, 95%CI [-17.69; -4.91]). Comparing to those without disability, the EQ-5D-5L value of people having one significant disability and people having multiple disabilities would be 0.19 point lower (95%CI [-0.22; -0.16]) and 0.36 point lower (95%CI [-0.43;-0.30]), respectively. Similarly, the EQ-VAS were lower at 18.52 point (95%CI [-21.24; -15.79]) and 29.60 point (95%CI [-34.53; -24.66]) for people having one or multiple disabilities, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: The HRQOL is statistically lower among people with disabilities and among people with mobility/self-care/cognition disabilities.
