OBJECTIVES : analysis of the volume and structure of consumption of inhalation drugs to treat asthma in Ukraine compared with data in Estonia.

METHODS : Estimation of drug consumption was performed according to the ATC / DDD method using the international index DDD / 1000 inhabitants/day (DID). The number of packages of drugs are taken from the information system "Pharmexplorer" of the company "Morion" (December 2020), and DDD for drugs – from the WHO website. The level of drug consumption in Estonia was estimated using statistics.

RESULTS : In 2020, 15 INNs of inhaled drugs for the treatment of asthma were registered in Ukraine, and 25 INNs of drugs were registered in Estonia. The largest consumption of inhaled drugs in Ukraine was set for salbutamol – 3.57 DID. The level of its consumption in Estonia was 2.80 DID. The second leader in consumption in Ukraine was the combination of fenoterol + ipratropium bromide – 0.82 DID. The level of its consumption in Estonia was 0.96 DID. In fourth place, the third leader in consumption in Ukraine and Estonia was the combination of salmeterol + fluticasone – 0.54 DID, and in Estonia, its consumption exceeded five times – 2.77 DID. In Estonia, the first and second place in terms of consumption was taken by the combinations formoterol + budesonide – 4.70 DID and vilanterol + fluticasone – 3.58 DID, the last of which is not registered in Ukraine. In terms of total consumption, Estonia (DID 25.11) outperformed consumption in Ukraine 3.8 times (DID 6.60).

CONCLUSIONS : salbutamol was the leader among inhaled drugs to treat asthma in Ukraine, and in Estonia, salbutamol ranked third. The leaders in Estonia were the more modern combinations of formoterol + budesonide and vilanterol + fluticasone. In terms of consumption of the studied drugs, Estonia was 3.8 times ahead of Ukraine.
