OBJECTIVES: Due to the worldwide spread of COVID-19, some restrictions were introduced, which could result in developing distress and somatic symptoms. This survey aimed to study mental and sexual health of men during the COVID-19 outbreak.

METHODS: An online survey was conducted to collect data on contact with people suspected of infection/infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, use of stimulants, and perceived mental and sexual health during isolation among Polish men. They were also asked to answer the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire.

RESULTS: 606 men with a mean age of 28.46±9.16 years took part in the survey. Of them, 460 (75.91%) reported living with a partner. Regarding COVID-19 status, 14 (2.3%) were in quarantine, 21 (3.5%) had a history of contact with an infected person, and 21 (3.5%) reported a death among friends/family. As many as 10 (1.7%) men admitted that they were taking sedatives due to pandemic stress. Fear of contracting the COVID-19 infection had a negative impact on the mental health of 132 (21.8%); fear of the health condition of loved ones caused stress and a depressed mood of 253 (41.7%) men; and media reports worsened 185 (30.2%) men’s mental health. Of the surveyed men, 293 (48.3%) felt lonely and isolated, and 153 (25.2%) reported more frequent use of stimulants. The median BDI was 5 (IQR: 2-12) with severe depression in 29 (4.3%) men. Overall, 421 (69.5%) men reported having sexual activity during the pandemic. The median scores for the IIEF were: erectile function 28 (IQR 5-30); orgasmic function 10 (IQR 0-10); sexual desire 9 (IQR 8-9); intercourse satisfaction 12 (IQR 0-14); overall satisfaction 8 (IQR 5-10).

CONCLUSIONS: Despite the lockdown settings, the overall DBI and IIEF scores were in the normal range despite respondents expressing perceived fears and discomfort.
