The Incidence of Lymphovascular Invasions in Coloretal Carcinoma

Objectives: Colorectal carcinomas are tumours that are located at colon and rectal areas. After lung cancer it is the second common cause of death, the mortality rate of colorectal cancer is increasing in Hungary as well. Most of patients get the surgery at an advanced stage, due to the lack of screening tests. The aim of this research was to examine the prognostic factors of colorectal carcinoma, paying special attention to the lymphovascular invasion. Methods: During this research we examined patients who have undergone large bowel resection for colorectal carcinoma at General Surgery Department of the Hospital between 2010-2014. We analysed 565 cases, regarding the patients’ gender, age, tumour localisation, number of lymph nodes examined and some other parameters. Results: The examination shows that the colorectal carcinomas were more frequent in male patients (n=303). Regarding the patient age, the most involved age group was that of elderly patients, mainly between the ages of 61 and 70 (n=103). Regarding the level of bowel wall infiltration, most of the tumours were pT3 (n=325). A diagnosis of lymphovascular invasion was made in less than half of the cases. (n=249). Special stains to facilitate the diagnosis of lymphovascular invasion were used only in an extremely low number of cases (n=12). These stains were orcein, CD31 and CD34. There was no significant difference between presence of lymphovascular invasion and use of the special stains (p=0,407). Conclusions: These results correspond to the results of international studies regarding the age and sex. There was no specification regarding lymphatic vessel and venosus invasion in the pathology reports. There was different type of data missing in a number of pathology reports which draws the attention towards the necessity of introducing the use of the special stains routinely.
