OBJECTIVES

: Generic preference-based measures conventionally require their value sets to be based on stated preferences elicited from the relevant general population. However, the methods used in child/adolescent health valuation studies have received much less research compared to adult health valuation studies, hence, fewer child/adolescent-specific value sets have been developed. This is partly because the elicitation of child/adolescent health state preferences poses many normative, practical, and ethical issues.

This presentation reviews the methods used to value EQ-5D-Y and CHU-9D health states. These are two of the most prominent generic preference-based measures for child/adolescent populations.

METHODS

: A ‘citation pearl-growing’ approach was taken whereby the bibliographies of key papers were reviewed to identify further relevant studies. A data extraction template was designed to extract information such as sample type, preference elicitation method and framing perspective.

RESULTS

: 13 studies were included, of which seven have been published since 2015 and three in 2020 alone. Of the six EQ-5D-Y studies reviewed, all involved adults adopting a child’s perspective. Two of the studies also involved adolescents valuing their own health.

In contrast, four of the seven CHU-9D studies involved adolescents valuing their own health. The four CHU-9D studies with samples including adults asked those adults to adopt an own health rather than a child’s perspective.

Overall, the most common preference elicitation method was discrete choice experiment. Methods used in EQ-5D-Y studies were more varied compared to the CHU-9D studies. Online survey was the most common mode of administration.

CONCLUSIONS

: Very few valuation studies of EQ-5D-Y and CHU-9D have been conducted, though there has been an increased focus on this research area in recent years. Further research is needed on the best practice for developing preference-based value sets for child/adolescent populations.
