OBJECTIVES: Migraine is a disabling neurological disease characterized by recurrent attacks of moderate to severe headaches. Objectives of this study were to evaluate the clinical, economic and humanistic burden of migraine in United Kingdom, France and Spain. The focus of this abstract is the humanistic burden of migraine in these countries.

METHODS: Data were collected from MediGuard, a free online patients’ community (proprietary of IQVIA), using a web-based, self-administered questionnaire. The study population included all migraine patients stratified by migraine classification (episodic migraine [EM]/chronic migraine [CM]) and identified between 6 February and 31 March 2019. Data collected included age, gender, and patient-reported outcomes, including Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS), Headache Impact Test (HIT-6), Migraine-specific Quality-of-life questionnaire (MsQ) v2.1 and EuroQol-5-Dimension (EQ-5D). Analyses were based on a pooled population of migraine patients in the three countries.

RESULTS: Overall, 205 patients were identified in United Kingdom (n=124), France (n=41) and Spain (n=40). 70.7% of migraine patients were female and 60% were aged >50 years. The EQ-5D scale showed that quality-of-life was more impacted for CM than for EM patients (0.54 vs 0.66). Headache-related disability was more impacted for CM patients than EM patients (56.23 vs 22.24). The proportion of patients with very severe disability was higher among those with CM than EM (45.5% vs 13.1%). Migraine-specific quality-of-life (MsQ) was more impacted for CM patients than for EM patients. Similar outcomes were observed with the HIT-6 scale; headache had a greater impact on the lives of CM patients than EM patients (67.75% vs 64.99%).

CONCLUSIONS: Results of patient-reported outcomes were consistent, regardless of whether the assessment tools/questionnaire used were generic (EQ-5D) or migraine related (MIDAS, HIT-6, MSQ), and suggest that, overall, migraine has a negative impact on patients’ quality-of-life, and CM patients report poorer health status than EM patients.
