IS PREFERENCE OF ELICITATION TECHNIQUE BASED ON THE DISEASE AREA BEING STUDIED?

| OBJECTIVES: Quality of life estimates associated with different stages of disease are crucial while performing economic evaluations and these are calculated using various direct and indirect elicitation techniques. This review aims to investigate if the choice of elicitation technique varies across disease areas. METHODS: A targeted literature search was conducted to identify articles that estimated the health utility values in two disease areas, oncology and infectious diseases in the last 10 years. Studies were also identified by hand-searching of reference lists of systematic reviews. The most prevalent cancers and infectious diseases were looked at, and the techniques used to estimate utility values were recorded. RESULTS: Twenty-four studies were included, 14 for oncology and 10 for infectious diseases. Direct methods were used in 9 of the 14 (64%) oncology studies, of which 6 (67%) used standard gamble (SG), and 3 (33%) used time trade-off (TTO) technique. The indirect method of visual analog scale (VAS) was applied only in combination with other methods (3 studies: SG and VAS, 1 study: TTO and VAS). In contrast, the trend observed for infectious disease studies showed that VAS was the most commonly used technique, as 80% (8 of 10) studies reported values using this technique. Only one study applied SG in combination with VAS. CONCLUSIONS: The reviewed literature suggests a potential pattern of choosing health utility scoring techniques based on the disease area and appears to warrant further investigation. |
