OBJECTIVES: The CarerQol-7D instrument was developed as a universal tool to measure care-related quality of life of informal caregivers. This study aimed to assess the validity of the Polish version of the CarerQol-7. METHODS: The Polish version of the CarerQol-7D was developed through a process of forward and backward translation, followed by pilot tests. A cross-sectional online survey was performed from December 2018 to January 2019 among a representative sample of the general Polish population (N=1,000). One hundred and fifty informal caregivers were identified (male 50%, mean age 45.6). We tested the construct validity of the CarerQol-7D in terms of clinical, convergent and discriminative validity. The psychometric characteristics of the CarerQol-7D were evaluated in relation to the caregiving situation and the EQ-5D-5L scores. The latter were estimated using TTO/DCE-based Polish and UK value sets. Subgroup comparisons were carried out with Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Spearman correlation coefficients were calculated between variables. RESULTS: Concerning clinical validity, overall CarerQol scores differed significantly (p<0.05) with the type of health problem of the patient (mostly physical: 74.7, mostly mental: 57.5), the duration of informal care (2-6 months: 62.5, 7-12 months: 65.9, more than 1 year: 71.7), and with the overall care experience (rather negative: 55.8, rather positive: 77.7). Regarding convergent validity, the CarerQol-7D overall scores were significantly correlated with the CarerQol-VAS (r=0.522), EQ-5D-5L index scores (for both UK and Polish tariffs) and EQ-VAS of the caregivers (r=0.397, 0.375 and 0.273, respectively). Discriminative validity was supported by significant differences in overall CarerQol scores for the different levels of the seven dimensions of the instrument. CONCLUSIONS: These results support the validity of the Polish language version of the CarerQol-7D, when used in informal caregivers in Poland. Further studies should focus on reliability and responsiveness of the instrument.
