Objectives: The main goal of our research was to determine the quality of life and functional status of patients undergoing primary knee replacement prosthesis directly prior to surgery and six weeks after surgery.

Methods: We used a self-made questionnaire as well as internationally used questionnaires, which were the following: WOMAC V.A. 3.0, SF-36, Knee Society Score (KSS). Our survey was conducted between September 2018 and January 2019.

Results: In all eight dimensions of the SF-36 questionnaire, the results showed a sharp increase in sixth week compared to pre-operative condition. We found significant differences in all three parts of WOMAC. The average of measured values before surgery was 264.29 points in the pain dimension, 131.5 points in the stiffness section, and 828 points in the physical function. After the operation these values decreased, which in this case meant improvement: 75.67 points for pain, 52.75 points for stiffness, 266.04 points for physical function, all were significant differences (p<0.001). We also found a difference in the Knee Society Score, where higher score means better value. Prior to surgery, the first part of the KSS, which measures the general condition of the knee, was 33.13 points, but after surgery it was 71.71 (p<0.001). In the second part of KSS, which measures the function of the knee, this result was 40.83 points before the operation and 85 points after the operation (p<0.001). There were no difference between men (first part: 75.63 points, second part: 86.61 points) and women (first part: 71.38, second part: 83.46 points), based on KSS after the surgery in either the first (p=0.075) or second part (p=0.252).

Conclusions: From the results of our study, we can say that people with prosthetics, already in the early postoperative period, live a significantly better quality of life than before surgery.
