ISSUE

: With the advancement of technology and improved surgical technique, minimally invasive surgery was introduced, which enabled smaller incisions, less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. In addition, further technological advancement brought about robotic surgery, which offered better visualization, dexterity and access to hard to reach areas for surgeons, potentially enabling better outcomes for the patients. Most recently, the healthcare sector saw the emergence of digital surgery, which comprises 3 areas: 1) robotics and advanced instruments, 2) advanced imaging, 3) machine learning and big data. As these are new in healthcare, there are no established mechanisms to appropriately evaluate their value, and access and reimbursement mechanisms. Therefore, it would be critical to gather key stakeholders and discuss the current developments of digital surgery and ways to evaluate its value.

OVERVIEW

: Digital surgery is a newly emerging concept, beyond robotic surgery. With the advancement of artificial intelligence and technology, software elements such as advanced imaging and machine learning and big data have been added to the existing hardware components (i.e. robotics equipment and advanced instruments). To make up for the current lack of any established mechanisms that can appropriately evaluate the value and access and reimbursement mechanisms of digital surgery, three panelists from hospital, government and industry have been invited to this discussion.

Each panel will share their view and experience on the value digital surgery can bring, the unique nature of digital surgery, the considerations for value evaluation system, and discuss next steps to have a more orchestrated and efficient way to serve the shared goal of improved patients outcomes and sustainability in healthcare system.
