Influenza Vaccination in Adult Patients with Hypertension or Diabetes in South Korea: A CROSS-Sectional Study

OBJECTIVES : To address the coverage rate for influenza vaccination and related factors depending on hypertension or diabetes status in Korean adults. METHODS : The study population included 16,206 participants aged ≥20 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2016 to 2018. The health interview was a self-administered questionnaire and that gathered socioeconomic factors and health-related factors. The influenza vaccination status was estimated by the question about receiving a flu shot in the last 12 months. Hypertension and diabetes were defined by health examination. Logistic regression analyses, adjusted for age, sex, occupational status, education level, family income, marital status, smoking status, alcohol intake, and obesity, were performed to examine the relationships between hypertension or diabetes status and vaccination. RESULTS : The mean age of participants was 51 years and 44% were male. The vaccination coverage rate was 43% among all adults. Significantly different coverage rate was observed in the age group divided into 20-39, 40-64, and ≥65 years (24% vs 30% vs 84%, P<.0001). For adults aged 40-64 years, the coverage rate was 37% and 39% among adults with hypertension and diabetes. Hypertension (OR=1.08, 95% CI=0.88-1.31) was not associated with vaccination in males aged 40-64 years, whereas diabetes (OR=1.18, 95 CI=0.92-1.51) was not associated with vaccination in females aged 40-64 years. CONCLUSIONS : Over 80% of the elderly aged ≥65 were vaccinated with or without diseases. Improving influenza vaccination coverage rate for adults with hypertension and diabetes is encouraged. It is necessary to devise strategies to raise coverage in patients with hypertension and diabetes.
