The Usability Testing of the Integrated E-Healthcare Services (IEHS) Web-Based Application in the Therapy Management of HIV and Tuberculosis in Indonesia

OBJECTIVES

We developed a secured and easy-to-use model of mobile health application to be used in Indonesia to promote patient’s self-management and enhances adherence in HIV and TB patients, called IeHS (Integrated e-Healthcare Services). This study aimed to explore the usability and user satisfaction toward the IeHS web-based app in TB/HIV-programme-related participants.

METHODS

The study was conducted in three cities in Indonesia, where groups of physicians, pharmacists, and HIV and TB patients were recruited from August to November 2019. A concurrent nested of the mixed method using quantitative and qualitative approaches (QUAN+qual) was applied to measure the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of the IeHS web-app. Each type of participant was asked to completed specific profession-related tasks, followed by an in-depth interview.

RESULTS

There were 25 participants (6 physicians, 12 pharmacists, and 7 patients) who participated in the study for which all of them had higher education except for one patient participant, familiar with the use of technology, and had used the technology on a daily basis. Physicians and pharmacists encountered minor difficulties in completing profession-specific tasks. User satisfaction was categorized as good, with all the median scores above 69 (74.6 vs. 77.9 vs. 80.7, respectively for the physician, pharmacist, and patient). Feedbacks were mostly about the convenience aspect while using and also the need for training to get familiar with IeHS. There was a reluctance to use the web-based app from two physicians because they preferred to use the manual procedures of writing health records and prescriptions.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of technology in Indonesian healthcare is increasingly growing in numbers, although certain factors need to be discerned to elevate its existence. This study proved all parties willing and able to use the technology (IeHS) with some improvement in technology, training, as well as government commitment to actively taking part in the e-healthcare.
